wax, pigment and ink on yupo, 2012

While repetitive botanical patterns often symbolize natural and divine grandeur, these pieces depict floral motifs in a state of decomposition. References to the cycles of nature appear throughout, marking phases of opulence, decay and renewal. Machine made yupo paper provides an ideal surface for layering ink and raw pigments with cold wax as a binder. The unique surface allows me to develop and remove layers, enabling parts to chip away, ghost images to surface, areas dense with pigmentation to expand and tension to develop between the synthetic substrate and the organic imagery.

I am thrilled that this work was featured in the Cold Wax Book by Rebecca Crowell and Jerry McLaughlin.
