LIVING SYSTEMS

mixed media installation
Sun Gallery, Hayward, CA, 2016

The site-specific installation, Living Systems, combines my work with arabesque botanical motifs and cartography to explore the unsteady balance of organic forms within defined structures. Studying map projections provided a geo-political lens for viewing how map distortions reflect and shape global political beliefs.

The arabesque imagery was printed on layers of transparent mylar, building up the tonal range through alternating applications of paint and ink. The piece was assembled on-site, allowing the flowers to cascade and fall to the floor amidst an evaporating map grid and fragments. Ultimately, the work is an examination of the balance between nature and human intervention, chaos and structure, and collapsing and restructured systems.
